Miss Richfield 1981, long a favorite performer in Provincetown, made her New York City debut with the holiday production Fall on Your Knees. With her oversized white specs, bouffant hairdo and white gloves, she is a cartoonish, time warped Midwestern beauty pageant queen. She claims to hail from Richfield Minnesota where ’butter is a spice and gravy is a beverage". Through song and comic storytelling, Fall is part travelogue (Miss Richfield has visited "3 of the 5 continents") as well as a showcase for Richfield’s twisted take on Christmas classics.
The production was well structured and paced, and just the right scale for the venue. Richfield’s video segments, one portraying her making her way across country dressed as a Xmas tree, the second a goofy Hawaiian vacation video were smart and clever. The costumes were imaginative and effective, from the Gumby-esque Christmas Tree outfit (complete with gift wrapped box shoes) to the trampy red sequined choir robe. With precision timing, Miss Richfield moved things along, from the bawdy arts and crafts segment to the hilarious, audience sing along holiday song medley (We Wish You a Jewish Christmas).
Miss Richfield truly shines when interacting with audience members, both while stalking amongst them with her long cord microphone or when she brings them onstage as part of the act. She was merciless with one hapless woman from New York City ("You have that tired, haggard look", "She obviously has no money"); the audience howled at her reply to a sexy man who identified himself as an artist: "So you work in a restaurant?" The evening reached a climax as Richfield told the story of Jesus (which lesbians love "...because it’s about childbirth and involves no men") with a rollicking performance of Proud Mary. This was followed by Miss Richfield paying a holiday ditty on a saw, and doing handstands for a tribute to America.
Miss Richfield is twisted, demented and campy; Fall on Your Knees was an uproarious early Christmas gift for everyone lucky enough to catch this memorable one night only performance.
